Why a checklist beats a gut feeling

A slick website and a big welcome bonus tell you nothing about whether a bookmaker will actually pay you. The only reliable way to bet safely is to run the same checks every time, before you deposit a cent. This is that checklist — the exact things we verify before featuring any operator on our best betting sites and reviews pages.

1. Verify the licence — properly

This is non-negotiable and comes first.

  • Find the regulator name and licence number (usually in the site footer).
  • Go to that regulator’s official website and confirm the licence is real, current, and issued to this operator.
  • Don’t trust a logo or a badge on the betting site itself — anyone can copy an image. The claim must be checkable at the source.

If you can’t verify a real, current licence with a named regulator, stop. Nothing else on this list matters if the operator answers to no one. Our betting by country pages point to which regulators apply where you are.

2. Check the reputation

  • Look for a track record of paying withdrawals — the single most important real-world signal.
  • Read independent reviews and player experiences, weighting patterns over one-off complaints.
  • Be wary of operators with widespread, consistent reports of stalled or refused payouts.

3. Read the important terms before depositing

  • Bonus terms: wagering requirement, minimum odds, expiry, excluded payment methods. See how betting bonuses work.
  • Withdrawal rules: limits, processing times, and whether you must withdraw to your deposit method.
  • Account terms: the operator’s right to limit or close accounts — normal, but know it’s there. See why bookmakers limit accounts.

4. Protect your account

  • Strong, unique password. Never reuse one from another site.
  • Two-factor authentication wherever offered.
  • Complete KYC early so withdrawals aren’t held later — see our KYC guide.
  • Keep payment accounts in your own name, matched to your registration.
  • Never share your password, PIN or one-time codes. No legitimate support will ask for them.

5. Choose a safe payment method

  • Match your deposit and withdrawal method where the book requires it.
  • Understand your rail’s fees and speed — our reviews cover cards, e-wallets, crypto and mobile money.
  • Remember crypto and mobile money have no chargebacks, so choosing a licensed book matters even more.

6. Set your limits before you play

Safe betting isn’t only about the operator — it’s about you.

  • Decide your budget for the week or month, and treat it as spent-on-entertainment, not investment.
  • Set a deposit limit in the app so an impulsive top-up isn’t possible.
  • Never chase losses. Chasing is the fastest route to harm.
  • Know the tools: deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion. Our responsible gambling page explains each.

The red flags that mean “walk away”

Stop immediately if you see:

  • No verifiable licence, or a vague “internationally licensed” claim with no regulator named.
  • Pressure to deposit fast, or bonuses that seem too generous to be real.
  • Requests for your password, PIN or codes.
  • Widespread reports of unpaid withdrawals.
  • No responsible-gambling tools or support links anywhere on the site.

The one-minute version

Before you deposit: verify the licence at the regulator’s site, confirm the book actually pays, read the withdrawal and bonus terms, secure your account, pick a sensible payment method, and set a budget you can afford to lose. Do those six things every time and you’ve eliminated the vast majority of betting risk that’s actually avoidable.
